Sunday Finals Day July 22nd – Results and Report
The gloom mongers amongst the club shook their heads and spoke gravely of canceling Finals Day. And even as I standing in 3 feet of water in Chiswick on Friday afternoon put in a call to Michael suggesting how we could play 14 finals on the hard courts starting at about 6 in the morning. But of course we forgot about Andy Jenkins the tournament secretary who has an understanding with the great gold top in the sky and of course Sunday was a most glorious day.
In the morning six junior finals took place and it was just a joy to see loads of young kids battle it out on our grass courts watched by nervous and anxious parents. People who say we don’t have many juniors was not watching.
In the afternoon Andrew Birse beat Michael Jones in 3 cracking sets to win the Men’s singles title. Katre overcame Kirsty for the second year running to win the Ladies. Ed Wright and Shahin were too solid for a now knackered Andrew Birse (4 matches over the weekend + a flight in from Hong Kong) + Jeremy Sharp and again Kirsty and Katre combined to beat off the challenge of Laura and Claire.
Laura though triumphed with the Club’s character Mark Cummings beating Dominic and Susan in the mixed under a clear blue sky.
The social Tournament was also in full swing with Andrew Billinge and Julian Sykes triumphing against Kevin and Joe and Billinge again and Lynda Fisher beat Nicole and Kevin in a long drawn out match in front of children and well oiled spectators.
It was a great day – loads of Pimms and Bar B Q’s and everyone chipped in to umpire/ call lines and support the players. It summed up what this club was all about and kinda compensates for this damp summer.
